Beat gestures modulate auditory integration in speech perception.
Spontaneous beat gestures are an integral part of the paralinguistic context during face-to-face conversations. Here we investigated the time course of beat-speech integration in speech perception by measuring ERPs evoked by words pronounced with or without an accompanying beat gesture, while participants watched a spoken discourse. Words accompanied by beats elicited a positive shift in ERPs a...
متن کاملBeat gestures facilitate speech production
Does gesturing help speakers find the right words? According to several theories of speech-gesture relationships, iconic gestures should facilitate speech production, but beat gestures should not. Here we tested the effects of gesturing on word production in two experiments. Participants produced lowfrequency words from their definitions while instructed to perform beat gestures, iconic gesture...
متن کاملPerception of Coproduced Speech Gestures
In this paper, coarticulatory variations were first obtained with a speech gesture coproduction model. Then, we investigated the perceptual effects of the variabilities using stimuli synthesized with an acoustic tube model deduced from acoustic theory, the DRM model. Perceptual tests showed that the ears tolerate such variations to a considerable degree.
متن کاملTemporal window of integration in auditory-visual speech perception.
Forty-three normal hearing participants were tested in two experiments, which focused on temporal coincidence in auditory visual (AV) speech perception. In these experiments, audio recordings of/pa/and/ba/were dubbed onto video recordings of /ba/or/ga/, respectively (ApVk, AbVg), to produce the illusory "fusion" percepts /ta/, or /da/ [McGurk, H., & McDonald, J. (1976). Hearing lips and seeing ...
متن کاملSpeaker's hand gestures modulate speech perception through phase resetting of ongoing neural oscillations.
Speakers often accompany speech with spontaneous beat gestures in natural spoken communication. These gestures are usually aligned with lexical stress and can modulate the saliency of their affiliate words. Here we addressed the consequences of beat gestures on the neural correlates of speech perception. Previous studies have highlighted the role played by theta oscillations in temporal predict...
